Author Biographies

Alyse C. Hachey is Associate Professor of Education and Deputy Chair of the Teacher Education Department at the Borough of Manhattan Community College—City University of New York. In addition to her PhD in Educational Psychology from Columbia University, Alyse holds a M.Ed. in Instructional Technology and Media and a MA in Computing and Education from Teachers College, a MA in Education from the University of Michigan and a B.S. in Elementary Education with Early Childhood Education specialization from Eastern Michigan University. Currently, Alyse serves as a faculty advisor for eLearning at BMCC-CUNY. Prior to coming to BMCC, Alyse served as a coordinator of Distance Learning at Teachers College from 2000-2005. In addition to her previous research and experience in instructional design, Alyse has taught online and hybrid courses at both the graduate and under graduate level for over ten years. Claire W. Wladis is Associate Professor of Mathematics at the Borough of Manhattan Community College—City University of New York. Her research includes both mathematics and mathematics education research. She has a B.A. in philosophy from Yale University, an M.S. in mathematical sciences from the University of Texas at Dallas, and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Graduate Center at the City University of New York. She has published several articles in geometric group theory as well as mathematics education and is currently focusing on educational research projects on online learning, mathematics remediation, and cooperative learning techniques. She has been teaching online since 2004, and has developed several online courses, including one of the core requirements for the City University of New York’s Online Baccalaureate program.

Katherine (Kay) M. Conway, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Business and Deputy Chair of the Business Management Department at the Borough of Manhattan Community College – City University of New York. Kay’s background spans both corporate and academia, having spent almost a dozen years in the finance industry prior to joining BMCC. Kay’s educational background is dichotomous as well, with degrees in both business and education. Kay has a Masters in Business Administration and a doctorate in Higher Education, Administration, Leadership and Technology, both from New York University. A member of the initial cohort that developed online courses at BMCC, Kay teaches online and her research examines student success and retention in the online environment.
