Abstract

The metaverse has emerged as an increasingly popular platform for collaborative teaching and learning. This study presents reflections from three instructors who have used a metaverse platform (FrameVR. io), alongside other virtual modalities, in a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project. The instructors reflected on their students’ virtual exchanges and discussions within these platforms, as well as their insights into how such environments can support future international and intercultural interaction. The findings suggest that, when purposefully integrated into COIL, the metaverse can enrich both intercultural learning and teacher development. This potential, however, depends on thoughtful design, ongoing reflection, and pedagogical flexibility. This study, therefore, encourages educators to view the metaverse not as a novelty but as an evolving ecosystem for collaborative learning and intercultural growth.
