Abstract
This study investigates the use of Facebook Groups as a temporary learning management system (LMS) for a general education Art Appreciation course during a transitional academic period. Conducted over an 18-week semestral term, the research involved first- and second-year students from various college programs, most of whom came from working-class families and had prior experience with formal LMS platforms. This study employed a qualitative-descriptive research design, supported by descriptive quantitative analysis. Open-ended survey responses formed the primary data source, which were analyzed thematically, while frequency counts of student responses highlighted general trends. Triangulation through teacher records, student submissions, and online engagement logs validated the findings. The design is situated within a mixed-method orientation, emphasizing qualitative interpretation with quantitative support. Findings revealed that Facebook Groups provided a familiar, accessible, and interactive environment, though issues such as limited structure and potential distractions were noted. The study was framed by Constructivism, Connectivism, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), and Media Richness Theory, which guided the interpretation of both qualitative insights and platform use. This research highlights the potential of social media platforms as flexible, low-cost instructional alternatives, especially in times of LMS unavailability. Implications point toward the need for adaptable pedagogical strategies and equity-focused design in online education. The study offers practical recommendations for educators considering nontraditional platforms in blended or emergency learning contexts.
